I absolutely agree with you here. I have never seen a single ad for YouTube, yet I know exactly what it is and what it does. Just from word of mouth, video links, etc. You can’t top that kind of advertising.

It is quite surprising. YouTube community increased by 13,000+ in the last 3 weeks inside mixi, while G-video by 6.
No translation into Japanese language, no adaptation, in a way terrible interface to most Japanese, who don’t understand English. But it is exploding.
I knew that Google Video lagged, but I didn’t know just by how much. It may have something to do with more aggressive policing for copyright violators, or it may be just the network effect. YouTube does police, but its scan coverage is not as dense.
Regarding the localization comment, I think we ought to give Japanese more credit. Just consider Mori-san here. And as an anime watcher, I never cease to be amazed at the amount of English used, especially written (and no, I am talking about domestic releases, not international). It is clear that almost everyone in Japan is capable of finding “My Videos” button.
I can go even further and observe that I navigate all sorts of complicated websites in Japanese, practically not knowing the language at all. As long as I can copy and paste kanji into dic.yahoo.com, it’s not an issue.

I agree with your assessment. I think most Japanese YouTube contents are copyright infringing (I think content from network TV are mostly copyright protected.) If google video is more strict on that, I think that explains some (even most) part.
BTW, do you watch Japanese anime in Japanese or with caption or translation? Anime comes on top of my mind for product / services Japan can export; they are no longer auto, TV sets, walkman, or VCRs.
I watch anime with subtitles, but in view of the deep divide in the fandom, I hasten to note that I am not against dubbed releases as such. The quality of English voice acting varies and so does the quality of the translation.
I bought an SLR camera this week, a Canon EOS-350 aka Digital Rebel XT. It is a better camera than similar offerings from Olympus. The Consumer Reports magazine agrees. And what do you know, Olympus make their cameras in China, and my Canon was made in Japan. As they say, plural of “anecdote” is not “data”. Nonetheless, it appears that Japanese products remain globally competitive at least in some areas.

Oh, I also prefer English movies original with subtitbles, too. The only exception is going to movie such as disney with my daughter of 8, who can not read subtitbles.
CANON (did you know it is pronouced ã‚ヤノン not ã‚ャノン with large ヤ not with small ャ) is an excellent company. I don’t know why they don’t enter mobile phone manufacturing business where camera function and even photo sharing might be critical.

Youtube is beating google video because it is far superior to google video. I once submitted a video to both youtube and google video at the same time. The video was available on youtube within minutes. It took 2 months for google video to approve my clip and allow it to go public, long after I had posted my blog update featuring a youtube hosted clip. Google video sucks.
